Flood Safety Tips for Northwest Fort Worth

1/14/2019 (Permalink)

Storms and heavy rains devastate different regions every year.  Some of the biggest dangers caused by storms can occur after the storm has already passed.  Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. On average, floods cost $6 billion in annual losses in the U.S.   Flooding can also result from plumbing failures, frozen pipes and damaged structures. Knowing how to prepare and deal with potential flooding in advance can affect how much of your property can be restored and how much has to be replaced.

Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is potential for suffering flood damage.  Below are flood safety tips to follow:

During a Flood Watch or Warning

  • Gather emergency supplies
  • Listen to your local radio or television station for updates.
  • Have immunization records handy (Store immunization records in a waterproof container)
  • Prepare an emergency food and water supply.  Store at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet.  Store at least a 3-day supply
  • Bring in outdoor possessions (lawn furniture, grills, trash cans) or tie them down securely
  • If evacuation appears necessary:  turn off all utilities at the main power switch and close the main gas valve.
  • Leave areas subject to flooding:  low spots, canyons, washes, etc.  (Remember:  avoid driving through flooded areas and standing water)

After Flooding Occurs

  • Avoid driving through flooded areas and standing water.  As little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle
  • Do not drink flood water, or use it to wash dishes, brush teeth, or wash/prepare food.  Drink clean, safe water.
  • If you evacuated:  return to your home only after local authorities have said it is safe to do so.
  • Listen to water advisory from local authorities to find out if your water is safe for drinking and bathing.  (During a water advisory, use only bottled, boiled, or treated water for drinking, cooking, etc.)
  • When in doubt, throw it out!  Throw away any food and bottled water that comes/may have come into contact with flood water.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide(CO) poisoning.  Use generators at least 20 feet from any doors, windows, or vents.  If you use a pressure washer, be sure to keep the engine outdoors and 20 feet from windows, doors, or vents as well.

Easy Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth for Saginaw, Fort Worth, and Haslet

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Easy Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth for Saginaw, Fort Worth, and Haslet In 2016 Texas weather included 90 tornadoes and over 35 inches of precipitation.

Texans often consider certain local weather patterns to be unique to our state – the hot, humid summers, the wide temperature fluctuations in the spring and fall, and all types of storms: tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, wind storms, and ice storms. Even if you watch the weather report on television every morning, Texas weather can surprise you, and before you know it, you're dealing with storm damage to clean up.

Storm Damage Preparedness Tips

First, put our number in your phone: 817.232.3333.  If you're in a situation where a storm has damaged your home, it's likely you'll get your loved ones out and you may be sitting in your car or at the neighbor's house wondering what to do next.  When you have SERVPRO's number handy, we'll be ready for you!

Next, consider your insurance.  Do you have the right kind?  Consumers usually shop for the best price, but around here, we really need to find the best value because nearly every Texan has to deal with storm damage to their home or vehicle at some point.  Ask your agent what your coverage is like if you suffer storm damage.  What about flooding? Should you consider adding flood insurance?

The next project to tackle is to take an inventory of your personal property.  There are tools available for your phone or tablet that can simplify the process of documenting your belongings.

Take a look around your home, and make sure that everything is secure.  Make a visual inspection of your roof and look for any potential problems.  Make sure any carports or porches are secured to the home, and their posts are fastened to the ground.

Seal the windows and doors.  North Texas weather has a tendency to damage the seals over time, and it's advisable to go back over these periodically.

Finally, as you watch the weather, when you know there is a storm approaching, make sure your yard is clear.  Secure outdoor furniture, and make sure gardening tools are put away.  Anything left out can become a missile in high winds, and a few minutes of care can remove these dangers.

If you do suffer storm damage, then we're here to help.  Call us at 817.232.3333. We'll work with you and your insurance company to help make it... "Like it never even happened."

Flood Damage from Rising Water in NW Fort Worth, Texas

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Flood Damage from Rising Water in NW Fort Worth, Texas Flood water has left a mess in this dining room in Fort Worth, Texas.

Experiencing a flood in Texas is a frightening ordeal. Flooding is a distinct type of water damage because it is water rising up over areas that are not usually submerged, and up into your home. The water is contaminated, and the damage is not covered by regular homeowner’s insurance policies. It’s devastating to see one’s belongings immersed in standing water. Some of the damages that occur from a flood are immediate and obvious, such as a couch that is drenched or books that are waterlogged. Other types of damage aren’t instantly apparent.

Here is a look at the general timeline of how flood damage progresses:

Within the First Hour

This is the emergency stage. The flood damage during this stage is obvious. There is rushing or standing water in the house, and household items and furniture are submerged. Contact SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth at 817.232.3333 to set an appointment for as soon as the water recedes. Our company specializes in water damage restoration in NW Fort Worth, Saginaw, Haslet, and the nearby communities. We will start the process of water extraction and address the restoration that needs to occur.

Within 24 Hours

A homeowner may think that if the water recedes or is removed quickly enough, the leftover moisture can be left to air dry and the homeowner’s possessions will be able to be salvaged. However, without professionals to evaluate the residence and assess the damage, there will likely be lasting repercussions. For instance, any water that was absorbed into wooden furniture can cause the wood to splinter or swell and weaken the structure. Also, a pervasive odor will likely start to be noticeable as carpets, fabrics, and walls will still be saturated with moisture. Untreated, the damage will continue to escalate. IICRC standard is for porous materials affected by flood water to be removed and disposed of. Call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth to handle the demolition and tear-out as well as treating your home with antimicrobial and drying out the structure.

Within a Week

Once a week passes, the odor will likely be more prevalent. Without professionals to handle the drying process, items such as carpets, drywall, and wood floors will have remained wet too long which invited mold and bacteria to grow. The water saturation by this point has also likely started to cause a chemical breakdown of wood fixtures, drywall, and insulation.

Long-Term Effects

The progression and extent of the water damage will vary depending on the length of time the flood water was in the home, how quickly water was extracted, and how long it took for most of the moisture to dissipate. Some damage that may appear are swollen or bowed wood floors and wood furniture that is structurally compromised, warped, or rotted. Flood damage can leave the home unsafe for inhabitants and can be very costly to fix.

The effects of a flood are felt long after the water is removed. Mold growth and structural weakening of furniture and floors are two of the effects that can’t be seen at the outset but will wreak major havoc on a family’s health and home. This is why immediate water mitigation is so important. Your experienced professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth are available around the clock to deal with the devastating effects of a flood. They will address the potential hazards, both seen and unseen, to restore your family’s home and peace of mind.

Storm Damage Storm Damage Restoration Experts - Fort Worth, TX | Water Damage Cleanup Specialists - Saginaw, TX | Hail Damage Cleanup for Haslet, TX Hail aka Sky Diamonds by Roofers and Collision shops!

Winter can bring some interesting weather to North Texas.  Some days, like today as I write this article, it's 80 degrees!  I see pictures of hunters in Michigan and New York all bundled up because of the cold in mid-November, and I'm still in short-sleeves and shorts!

However, I've seen some crazy storms here, and the worse ones usually involve ice in some form or fashion.  I've learned recently that roofers and body shop owners have an interesting name for hail:  sky diamonds!  They may not come out and say this while inspecting your roof or car for damage, but when they hear that there's hail in the forecast, they get a special twinkle in their eyes.

Hail Damage Usually Leads to Water Damage

If the hail damage is significant enough to cause holes, or damage roofing tiles, then water will likely get in and start to access your walls, ceilings, etc.  The first step in these situations is to get the roof tarped and mitigate the on-going damage from having more water getting into your home.  We'll let the roofers work with what they know best, and we'll focus on getting you dried out and on the road to recovery.

In many instances, we can dry out the walls and ceilings and not have to remove any debris.  Our teams know what to look for, and will examine a job, document the scene with pictures and then work with your insurance company on a solution that's clean, safe and acceptable to all.  The ultimate goal is to return your home "Like it never even happened."

We recommend taking a moment now and storing our number in your phone: 817.232.3333.  If there's anything life threatening, then be sure to call 911 first.  Once you can be sure your family is safe, then call us to come in and stop the on-going problem with tarps, etc. and figure out a path forward with fans, dryers, mops, whatever it takes!  We're the experts when it comes to recovering after the storm.

Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from Restoration Experts for Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet

Storm Damage Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from Restoration Experts for Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet Tornado Creating Storm Damage in Texas!

One thing Northerners are quick to point out is that they don't often have to deal with the violent storms we get in the Spring and Fall in North Texas.  (Nor do they see many armadillos or rattlesnakes!)  Unlike a hurricane, there typically isn't much warning, and before you know it, you're dealing with storm damage to clean up.

We're often interested in getting the best price, but around here, we really need to find the best value because nearly every Texan has to deal with storm damage at some point.  Ask your agent what your coverage is like if you suffer storm damage.  What about flooding?  If you don't live in a flood zone, it's relatively inexpensive to carry flood insurance, and you'll be covered.  Your agent will have the details, and if you need a referral, please give us a call.

The next project to tackle is to take an inventory of your personal property.  The Insurance Information Institute has a free app for iOS and Android that can simplify the process. Click here for details.

Take a look around your home, and make sure that everything is secure.  Make a visual inspection of your roof and look for any potential problems.  Make sure any carports or porches are secured to the home, and their posts are fastened to the ground.

Many roofers will offer a free inspection of your roof.  Make sure you get a reputable referral.  If something sounds fishy, then it may be prudent to have a home inspector out.  While they often review a home prior to purchase, they often review homes that have been lived in a while and can make recommendations on maintenance.

Seal the windows and doors.  North Texas weather has a tendency to damage the seals over time, and it's prudent to go back over these periodically.

Finally, as you watch the weather, when you know there may be trouble coming, make sure the yard is clear.  Secure any furniture, make sure gardening tools are put away.  Anything left out can become a missile in high winds, and a few minutes of care can remove these dangers.

Hopefully these tips will be useful to you and your family.  If you do suffer storm damage, then we're here to help.  Call us at 817.232.3333.  We'll work with you and your insurance company to help make it... "Like it never even happened."

Why You Shouldn't Wait to Call about Water Damage

1/27/2016 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Why You Shouldn't Wait to Call about Water Damage Flood Damage

Water damage should not be taken lightly. Whether from a burst pipe, foundation leak, clogged toilet, flood, or any other source, water damage can be hazardous to health and costly to repair if immediate action is not taken. Waiting to call can lead to wood rot of floorboards, mold and mildew growth on fabrics and in drywall, and permanent damage of furnishings.

The following is what can be expected when a call is made for emergency water restoration in Fort Worth:

  1. When water damage is detected, the homeowner should call immediately, day or night. Water damage can get infinitely worse in a short span of time, so the issue needs to be addressed by a certified professional right away. Water damage will only escalate and become more costly the longer it remains untreated.
  1. A technician will come to inspect the home and do a damage assessment.  This will include identifying the source of the water and what type of water it is.

There are 3 categories of water:

Category 1 – clean water. This would be water from a tub that overflows or a broken water supply line. It poses minimal risk to humans.

Category 2 – grey water. Water from a dishwasher or sump pump back up would fall under this category.  This water is considered contaminated and could cause sickness in humans.

Category 3 – black water.  This water could be from sewage, ground surface water, or standing water. Black water is considered highly unsanitary as it likely contains harmful bacteria that can cause severe illness in humans.

  1. After the assessment is completed, a plan is generated, the first step of which will be water extraction. This is done through industrial strength wet/dry vacuums and submersible pumps. Carpets and carpet pads are inspected and removed if determined to be beyond repair. Moisture detectors and infrared cameras are used to detect pockets of water that may be hidden in cracks and crevices.
  1. Removing the water is not enough. Flooring and walls retain moisture, and they need to be dried in an efficient manner so as to prohibit the growth of mold and mildew. Through the use of commercial grade dehumidifiers and air circulators, customers can rest assured knowing their home and belongings reach acceptable industry standards of dryness.
  1. The home is then thoroughly sanitized. This includes the walls, carpeting, furniture, and belongings damaged by water. Without this step, a residence could be plagued with mold and mildew for years to come. The decontamination process performed by certified technicians eliminates this concern for homeowners.
  1. The final step in water damage management is restoration. Some furnishings or structural elements of the home may not be salvageable. The water damage professionals will restore the home to its previous condition by replacing carpeting, flooring, insulation, or dry wall, or even reconstructing parts of the home destroyed by water damage.

Left untreated, the damage caused by a water emergency escalates at an alarming rate, which can leave a house unsafe and pose serious health risks. That is why fast water damage restoration is so important. The sooner a homeowner calls, the sooner experienced technicians can stop the progression of damage, saving customers thousands in repairs and getting them back to living in a safe and healthy home.

Storm Damage Spring Storm Season is Here! Thunderstorm

Storm Damage

Springtime in North Texas means storm season is here!  While we get the advantage of some 80 degree days in March and April, we also have to worry about heavy rains, strong winds, thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes!  We at SERVPRO haven't yet figured out how to create a protective shell around your home, but we are ready at a moment's notice if you have to deal with storm damage at your property.

Storms can uproot trees, pick up patio furniture, and occasionally smash in a window.  Our storm damage clean-up crew can assess the damage, complete any temporary repairs to protect your property and family, and then make arrangements to have permanent repairs made.  We can quickly board up windows, or install a tarp over a hole in the roof; and then clean up any water that has accumulated inside your home.

Water Damage Restoration

Removing any standing water is a critical first step because water damage can be extremely detrimental to the infrastructure of your home.  Water damage restoration is a specialty of ours, and we have vacuums, dryers and other special equipment to remove the water as quickly as possible and dry out carpeting, floors, and more.  Procrastinating when it comes to water damage restoration can make the difference between having to arrange for a repair, to a costly replacement of large sections of your flooring or walls.

Once the storm passes, we can work with your homeowner’s insurance company to provide photos, reports and estimates to complete the necessary repairs.  Once approved, SERVPRO will make all of the arrangements to repair the damage and restore your home as it was before the storm hit.

Keep our number handy by adding it to your phone today, 817.232.3333.  Once you call us, we’ll contact our crews and give you an estimate of how long before we’ll be on site.  In the meantime, look over our home emergency tips and stay safe!
