Protect your Outdoor Faucets from Harsh Winter Weather – Water Damage / Fort Worth / Haslet / Saginaw

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Protect your Outdoor Faucets from Harsh Winter Weather – Water Damage / Fort Worth / Haslet / Saginaw Covering your outdoor faucets during winter weather can help prevent water damage.

As we prepare for colder temperatures in Northwest Fort Worth, it's important to think about outside faucets.  In Tarrant County many homebuilders don't really plan for sub-freezing temperatures, and want to save costs wherever possible.  Their main concern is NOT to prevent water damage, but rather keep things simple and as inexpensive as possible.

A faucet cover is a relatively simple tool that protects your outdoor faucet against freeze damage.  The covers are quick and easy to install. Just place the cover over the faucet and lock it firmly against the house exterior.  This creates an air pocket around the faucet and protects it from freezing temperatures and ice accumulation.

Water Damage Restoration Experts at Your Service

If the outdoor faucet remains exposed in the winter, the water in the pipe could freeze, expand, and burst the pipe. Water will rush out until you shut the water off.  If you are not home, a broken pipe can turn into a water damage disaster in no time.  If this does ever happen to you, then you'll want to give us a call as we are water damage restoration experts.  We've been working throughout Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet for many years, and we can mitigate the water damage and dry the wet materials.

Our team in Haslet is ready to help if you do need water damage restoration services.  However, for a few dollars (generally less than $5), you can protect your outdoor faucets and reduce the chances that you'll suffer water damage.

SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth is your local resource. We recommend putting our number in your mobile phone:  817.232.3333.  You'll have it handy should you ever need our services.

Water Damage Prevention: Preparing your Northwest Fort Worth Home for Winter Weather

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Damage Prevention: Preparing your Northwest Fort Worth Home for Winter Weather When your NW Fort Worth home is prepared for winter weather, you can have fun outside in the snow.

As cold winter weather sets in here in Saginaw, Haslet, and Rhome, it can have a huge impact on your home if you are not properly prepared. Heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet, snow, or ice - all have the potential to cause serious property damage. When you take a little time to become prepared, you will feel more comfortable and help prevent costly damage to your home this winter.

Check your trees for weak limbs and branches too close to the roof or windows. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries. Remove the branches which are too close enough to your home.

Inspect your porches and patios for drainage problems and slippery areas. Proper drainage is important to alleviate flood hazard potential from rainy weather. Install mats or non-slip surfaces where water could be present.

Clear leaves and debris out of your rain gutters and downspouts, and make sure they are working properly.  Direct gutter downspouts away from the structure. Leaves, acorns, and other debris can obstruct the flow of water along the gutters and through the downspouts which  can lead to roof damage and water leaking into your house.

Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water faucets to drip when outside temperatures are below 32 degrees. Leave the cabinet doors open allowing inside air to circulate around pipes. Cover your outdoor faucets to protect them. Water that freezes inside a pipe can cause the pipe to crack or break, and then when the ice melts, water can damage your home.

At SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth we are here when you need us. Call 817.232.3333 anytime.

Water Damage Restoration Process in Saginaw, Haslet, Fort Worth TX

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Damage Restoration Process in Saginaw, Haslet, Fort Worth TX This clogged sink in Fort Worth, TX caused water damage in a two story home.

Water damage should not be taken lightly. Whether from a burst pipe, foundation leak, clogged toilet, flood, or any other source, water damage can be hazardous to health and costly to repair if immediate action is not taken. Waiting to call can lead to wood rot of floorboards and wood wall studs, mold growth in drywall, and permanent damage of furnishings.

Call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth at 817.232.3333 right away so we can provide water mitigation services. This is what you can expect:

  • When water damage is detected, the homeowner should call immediately, day or night. Water damage can get infinitely worse in a short span of time, so the issue needs to be addressed by a certified professional right away. Water damage will only escalate and become more costly the longer it remains untreated.
  • A technician will come to inspect the home and do a damage assessment.  This will include identifying the source of the water and what type of water it is. Each room will be carefully checked to see if it has been affected by water damage.

There are 3 categories of water:

Category 1 – clean water. This would be water from a tub that overflows or a broken water supply line. It poses minimal risk to humans.

Category 2 – grey water. Water from a dishwasher or washing machine would fall under this category.  This water is considered significantly contaminated and could cause sickness in humans.

Category 3 – black water.  This water could be from sewage, ground surface water, or standing water. Black water is considered grossly contaminated as it likely contains harmful bacteria that can cause severe illness in humans and animals.

  • After the assessment is completed, a plan is generated. Many times the first step will be water extraction. This is done through industrial strength wet/dry vacuums and submersible pumps. Carpets and carpet pads are inspected and removed if determined to be beyond repair. Moisture detectors and infrared cameras are used to detect pockets of water that may be hidden in cracks and crevices.
  • Removing the water is not enough. Flooring and walls retain moisture, and they need to be dried in an efficient manner so as to prohibit mold growth. Materials that are contaminated or non-restorable will be removed. Through the use of commercial grade dehumidifiers and air movers, as well as application of antimicrobial treatment, customers can rest assured knowing their home and belongings will soon return to acceptable industry standards of dryness.
  • The final step in water damage management is restoration. Some furnishings or structural elements of the home may not be salvageable. Restoration professionals will return the home to its previous condition by replacing carpeting, flooring, insulation, or dry wall, or even reconstructing parts of the home destroyed by water damage.

Left untreated, the damage caused by a water emergency escalates at an alarming rate, which can leave a house unsafe and pose serious health risks. That is why fast water damage restoration is so important. The sooner a homeowner calls, the sooner experienced technicians can stop the progression of damage, saving customers thousands in repairs and getting them back to living in a safe and healthy home.

Water Damage Water Damage Time Bombs in Your Home | Expert Tips from the Water Damage Restoration Experts for Fort Worth, TX Rubber Washing Machine Hoses

As the water damage restoration experts for Tarrant County, we've pretty much seen it all, and many times, we've seen it repeatedly.  One job we clean up frequently are burst washer machine hoses.  These are typically rubber supply line hoses that are constantly under pressure.  They have a lifespan of about 5 years, and will often break in the middle of the night or while you're at work.  Gone unnoticed, such a break will dump hundreds of gallons of water in your home quickly. One reference I found mentioned that washer machine hoses are responsible for $150 million dollars in damage each year!

Most pros recommend replacing these hoses every three to five years with stainless-steel braided hoses.  They generally cost less than $20 are are reinforced, with a flexible steel mesh.  For a few dollars more, you can get hoses that have a check valve, and they automatically stop when they sense a drop in pressure.  A $30 investment can save thousands in damage.

Water Bomblet - Ice Maker Supply Line

While the water line for the ice maker isn't as big, nor is it supplied with the same amount of pressure, it's usually a pretty simple plastic hose.  While you're in the process of upgrading your washer machine hoses, we also recommend getting a stainless-steel braided hose for the ice maker.  Here's one on Amazon for $25!

You may wonder why we offer such tips on our blog when it’s our job to clean up the messes?  What we’ve found is that there are plenty of messes, and these articles won’t likely solve them all.  What we do hope is that we’re able to establish ourselves as an expert in the community.  Perhaps you found us after the fact and need help, or you’ve been wondering about that hose, and how often they break.  Even if you take our advice, your neighbor may not.  We’d greatly appreciate your referral to them!

If you do ever have a problem, then be sure to give us a call at 817.232.3333.  We have the equipment, know-how and specialized training to restore you back to normal quickly and safely.

Water Damage Water Damage Prevention Tips - Restoration Experts for Haslet - Fort Worth - NW Tarrant County Attic HVAC with Condensate Pan and Drain

Living in Texas means living and working in environments with air conditioning.  It's hard to imagine how the first Texans lived here before AC was invented!  Since most Texas homes don't have basements, air conditioning evaporator coils are typically in the AC cabinet in the attic.  Left unchecked, this condensation can collect in the pan, and if the drainage tube is blocked, it will overflow into your house causing water damage.

Prevent Water Damage Before it Occurs

In hot, humid climates like ours, these drain tubes can become blocked with algae that may grow.  Once this is blocked, the water will collect in the pan, but this is typically only about 1" high and will only contain the overflow for so long.  Once the water leaks over the edge, it can flow onto your ceiling, and down the walls damaging drywall and causing water damage.

As water accumulates, it creates a perfect environment for mildew and mold to develop which can be dangerous for your family.  If this should happen to you, then the experts at SERVPRO can be on hand quickly.  We have specialized equipment to dry out the area, and can bring in experts to review the HVAC system and make sure the drainage line is clear.  Our crew can remove any damaged drywall sections, and get the area prepared for contractors to come in and restore the walls.

Recommended Prevention Tips

The simplest recommendation is to contact an HVAC professional in your area to review your system, and make sure the drainage tube is clear and working properly.  Many HVAC companies have regular maintenance programs that will include bi-annual inspections, and often give you priority service should you have a problem.  If you would like a recommendation, feel free to call our office, and we'll be happy to recommend some professionals in the area that we trust.

If you have the do-it-yourself mentality, then there are many videos and tools online that offer advice on how to inspect and clean this tube.  It's important to look for solutions for attic-based systems as other areas that use AC typically put their units in the basement.  One such relevant article we found while researching this article was from an AC professional in Houston. Click here to read their tips.

If you have any questions about this, or other ways to prevent water damage in your home, give us a call at 817.232.3333.  Why not program our number into your phone now, so you'll have it on hand in case of emergency?  We'll be here when you need us!

Water Damage Preservation Tips - Fort Worth - Haslet - Saginaw

Water Damage Water Damage Preservation Tips - Fort Worth - Haslet - Saginaw Exterior faucet cover can help prevent water damage

As we prepare for colder temperatures in Northwest Fort Worth, it's important to think about outside faucets.  Up North, there is typically a shut-off valve in the house, and people will turn off the water there.  Once shut off, they can open the outside faucet, and drain the remaining water.

The problem in Tarrant County is that builders don't really plan for sub-freezing temperatures, and want to save costs wherever possible.  Their main concern is NOT to prevent water damage, but rather keep things simple and as inexpensive as possible.

The cover in the attached picture is a relatively simple tool that should prevent the faucet from freezing.  The covers are generally styrofoam, and have a foam piece that allows you to make it snug against the exterior.  This creates an air pocket around the faucet and protects it from freezing rain would otherwise accumulate.

Water Damage Restoration Experts at Your Service

If the faucet remains exposed, the water in the pipe could freeze.  Water expands once frozen, and can burst the pipe.  These pipes typically do not have their own shut off valve.  Once they go, water will rush out until you turn the water off from within the house or at the main.   If this does ever happen to you, then you'll want to give us a call as we are water damage restoration experts.  We've been working throughout Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet for many years, and have dealt with this time and again.  We'll be able to dry out any areas in the home that have been flooded, and remove any debris that may be required.

Once the immediate problem is resolved, it's best to have a licensed plumber repair the pipe.  The finish work can then be completed by a home improvement specialist.  We can help in coordinating these experts if you prefer.

Our team in Haslet is ready to help if you do need water damage restoration services.  However, for a few dollars (generally less than $5), you can protect your faucets and reduce the chances that you'll suffer water damage.

It may seem counter intuitive for us to offer this type of advice, but we'd like to be your local resource for how to prevent a disaster.  We recommend putting our number in your mobile phone:  (817) 232-3333.  This way, you'll have it handy should you have to leave your home in a mad dash because of a storm, fire or some other problem.

Types of Flood Damage You Can’t See

Water Damage Types of Flood Damage You Can’t See Water Damage Effects

Experiencing a flood in Texas is a frightening ordeal. It’s devastating to see one’s belongings immersed in standing water. Some of the damages that occur from a flood are immediate and obvious, such as a couch that is drenched or books that are waterlogged. Other types of damage aren’t instantly apparent.

Here is a look at the general timeline of how flood damage progresses:

Within the First Hour

This is the emergency stage, where the flood occurs and water needs to be removed. The flood damage during this stage is obvious. There is rushing or standing water, and household items and furniture are submerged. It is during this emergency stage that a company which specializes in water damage restoration in Fort Worth should be contacted to start the process of water extraction and address the restoration that needs to occur.

Within 24 Hours

A homeowner may think that if the water is removed quickly enough, the leftover moisture can be left to air dry and the homeowner’s possessions will be able to be salvaged. However, without professionals to evaluate the residence and assess the damage, there will likely be lasting repercussions. For instance, any water that was absorbed into wooden furniture can cause the wood to splinter or swell and weaken the structure. Also, a pervasive odor will likely start to be noticeable as carpets, fabrics, and walls will still be saturated with moisture. Untreated, the damage will continue to escalate.

Within a Week

Once a week passes, the odor will likely be more prevalent. Without professionals to handle the drying process, items such as carpets, drywall, and wood floors will have remained wet too long which invited mold and bacteria to grow. The water saturation by this point has also likely started to cause a chemical breakdown of wood fixtures, drywall, and insulation.

Long-Term Effects

The progression and extent of the water damage will vary depending on the severity of the flood, how quickly water was extracted, and how long it took for most of the moisture to dissipate. Some of the damages that may appear are wooden floorboards that swell or bow and wood furniture that is structurally compromised as it becomes warped or begins to rot. These damages can leave the home unsafe for inhabitants and can be very costly to fix.

The effects of a flood are felt long after the water is removed. Mold growth and structural weakening of furniture and floors are two of the effects that can’t be seen at the outset but will wreak major havoc on a family’s health and home. This is why expedient water damage restoration is so important. Experienced professionals in the area are available around the clock to deal with the devastating effects of a flood. They will address the potential hazards, both seen and unseen, to restore not only a family’s home, but also their peace of mind.
