Types of Fires and How to Extinguish Them
Fires that most commonly occur in a home can be labeled into three main categories. Knowing how to extinguish different types of fire can save your home from extensive damage when seconds count.
Class A- the most common type of house fire that involves wood, paper, plastic, trash or cloth. This could be caused by faulty chimney, a candle knocked over, or a lightening strike. These fires are the easiest to extinguish with a Class A fire extinguisher or even simply dousing with water.
Class B- involve flammable liquid like oil, alcohol, and grease. These fires should be put out using a fire extinguisher rated for Class B or something like baking soda to cut off the oxygen supply. Adding water to this type of fire can actually make the situation worse.
Class C- electrical fires. Faulty appliances, old wiring, overloading outlets are a few examples of this type of fire. disconnecting the power source should be done first if you can do so safely. Extinguish the flames with a Class C extinguisher or baking soda.
