Mold damage found in this residential home in Ft. Worth, TX

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

A bathroom leak causes mold damage in this residential home in Ft. Worth, TX. The customer immediately called SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth.  Our trained technicians responded FAST and walked the homeowner through the job process step-by-step.  After assessing the damage our technicians removed and disposed of the drywall, cabinets, dried the other wet materials in the bathroom closet and kitchen, remediated the mold damage, and prepared the rooms for reconstruction.  An air scrubber was placed in the kitchen area to control the spread of airborne mold spores and other contaminants.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 817-232-3333

Winter Storm Preparedness-Frozen Pipes

12/14/2018 (Permalink)

Its that time of the year when freezing temperatures come when you least expect them, especially in Texas.  Frozen pipes are a common occurrence during the winter months.  Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes.  This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes.  No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.  If you have busted or broken pipes, call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth immediately.

Smoke and Soot damage causes odor in Rhome, TX

12/14/2018 (Permalink)

A kitchen stove top catches fire causing smoke, soot, and odor throughout the home right before the holidays in Rhome, TX.  SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth received a call to clean up the mess it left behind.  Our highly trained technicians assessed the damage and walked the homeowner through the job process step-by-step.  Our equipment was set up to draw out the odor left from fire damage.  An air-duct cleaning was completed along with cleaning windows, walls, and other items that were affected.  The homeowner was completely satisfied and celebrated the holiday with her family.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Storm Damage Staying Safe During a Storm in Northwest Fort Worth, TX Thunderstorms with lightning make a big impression in Northwest Fort Worth, TX.

In Texas, thunderstorms and heavy rain are common. When a storm is on the weather radar, stay safe with a few simple tips.

Fire Extinguisher tips for Homeowners

11/5/2018 (Permalink)

Most people pass by fire extinguishers as you walk  the hallways at work or school.  The question is do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?  According to FEMA, the majority of Americans don't know how to use an extinguisher, even if they have one at home.  Fires double in size every 60 seconds, so you don't want to be wasting time reading an instruction manual in an emergency situation.

Three questions to ask yourself before attempting to put a fire out with an extinguisher:

  1. Are you taller than the fire?
  2. Do you have the right fire extinguisher for the type of fire?
  3. Is the fire extinguisher pressurized?

If you answered yes to all three questions, then you are ready to put out the fire with the extinguisher.  Position yourself with your back to an unobstructed exit so you can get out quickly if necessary.  Safety comes first!

The discharge range for extinguishers can run from 6-20 feet.  You want to be far enough away to not be in danger of being burned, and close enough that the discharge will be effective.

When dealing with a fire extinguisher just remember the acronym PASS.

  • Pull the pin
  • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the trigger
  • Sweep from side to side

The next step is to slowly back away even if the fire appears to be extinguished, don't turn your back on it.  There could be hidden fires or unseen hot spots that can ignite into a large flame at any moment.  If you have any doubt about your ability to fight a fire.... EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY!

If you have never used a fire extinguisher before check with your local emergency services/community organizations who offer classes.  It is highly recommended that you do so.  Now you know the basics to pass along to others.

Common Mold Questions Everyone Asks!

11/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Common Mold Questions Everyone Asks! Damage discovered during remodeling project.

While answering the phones at our SERVPRO Franchise, we hear so many questions about mold. Information sources about mold can be helpful and relevant, or misleading. One good source of mold information for consumers is the Consumer Mold Information Sheet from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/mld/mldfaq.htm#cmis

How did I get mold in my house? Mold spores settle in your home all the time. With a source of moisture, they can multiply and grow on wood, carpet, drywall, and many other materials in your home.

What can I do about the mold in my house? Remove the sources of moisture by repairing water leaks and remove the affected materials. Consider using a licensed mold remediation contractor to make sure the job is done right. Then make sure your home has plenty of ventilation and air circulation, and keep the indoor humidity fairly low.

Is the mold in my house making me sick? Exposure to some molds may not be a concern for many healthy people. People who have asthma, allergies, or other health issues may be sensitive to mold. Consult with your medical professional if you are concerned about exposure to mold affecting your health.

There is a list of licensed Mold Assessment Consultants and Mold Remediation Contractors on the TDLR website.

Call us anytime at (817) 232-3333. We would be happy to assist with any water, fire, smoke, odor, or mold issues you may have.

Fire Damage Firework Safety in Haslet, TX Current Texas Counties with Burn Bans in effect

According to the National Fire
Protection Association, fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 40 injuries, and an average $43 million in direct property damage.

In 2017, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 12,900 people for fireworks related injuries; 54% of those injuries were to the extemities and 36% were to the head. Children younger than 15 years of age accounted for more than one-third (36%) of the estimated injuries.

There has been very little rain since March of this year and many Texas counties are currently under a burn ban. There were many grass and structure fires this weekend as fireworks could be heard popping for hours. If you must shoot fireworks, please adhere to a few simple safety tips:

Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles

Never relight a dud firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.

never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them into metal or glass containers.

Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.

Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.

Removing Pet Stains from Carpet

2/9/2018 (Permalink)

Did you get a new pet over the holidays? It often takes puppies and kittens a little time to figure out where their bathroom is. If your carpet is beginning to smell like a litter box, these cleaning tips might help.

First, clean up the accident as soon as possible. Be sure to blot the stain instead of rubbing, which will cause the stain to set into the carpet fibers. There are a couple different recipes using natural cleaners.

White Vinegar and Baking Soda

Fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar. Using a spray bottle allows you more control on the amount of vinegar used. Spray the entire stain until wet. Agitate with a brush if needed. Cover with baking soda. You will hear the baking soda begin to sizzle letting you know it's working. Allow the mixture to completely dry, preferably overnight if possible. Then vacuum up the baking soda.

Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and dish soap

Mix 4 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide, 2 tbsp. water, and a couple of drops of dish soap in a spray bottle. This can easily be doubled or tripled for larger stains if needed. Hydrogen Peroxide can have a bleaching effect so spot test for colorfastness. Spray the entire stain and agitate with a brush. Let the stain sit for 10 minutes then blot with a white towel. Repeat these steps if necessary.

Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners like Nature's Miracle can be purchased at a number of stores and are specifically designed to break down urine, feces, or vomit. The enzymes breakdown this organic material helping to remove odors and stains. These cleaners also sometimes contain smells that encourage your pet not to use that area again.

Easy Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth for Saginaw, Fort Worth, and Haslet

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Easy Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth for Saginaw, Fort Worth, and Haslet In 2016 Texas weather included 90 tornadoes and over 35 inches of precipitation.

Texans often consider certain local weather patterns to be unique to our state – the hot, humid summers, the wide temperature fluctuations in the spring and fall, and all types of storms: tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, wind storms, and ice storms. Even if you watch the weather report on television every morning, Texas weather can surprise you, and before you know it, you're dealing with storm damage to clean up.

Storm Damage Preparedness Tips

First, put our number in your phone: 817.232.3333.  If you're in a situation where a storm has damaged your home, it's likely you'll get your loved ones out and you may be sitting in your car or at the neighbor's house wondering what to do next.  When you have SERVPRO's number handy, we'll be ready for you!

Next, consider your insurance.  Do you have the right kind?  Consumers usually shop for the best price, but around here, we really need to find the best value because nearly every Texan has to deal with storm damage to their home or vehicle at some point.  Ask your agent what your coverage is like if you suffer storm damage.  What about flooding? Should you consider adding flood insurance?

The next project to tackle is to take an inventory of your personal property.  There are tools available for your phone or tablet that can simplify the process of documenting your belongings.

Take a look around your home, and make sure that everything is secure.  Make a visual inspection of your roof and look for any potential problems.  Make sure any carports or porches are secured to the home, and their posts are fastened to the ground.

Seal the windows and doors.  North Texas weather has a tendency to damage the seals over time, and it's advisable to go back over these periodically.

Finally, as you watch the weather, when you know there is a storm approaching, make sure your yard is clear.  Secure outdoor furniture, and make sure gardening tools are put away.  Anything left out can become a missile in high winds, and a few minutes of care can remove these dangers.

If you do suffer storm damage, then we're here to help.  Call us at 817.232.3333. We'll work with you and your insurance company to help make it... "Like it never even happened."

Protect your Outdoor Faucets from Harsh Winter Weather – Water Damage / Fort Worth / Haslet / Saginaw

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Protect your Outdoor Faucets from Harsh Winter Weather – Water Damage / Fort Worth / Haslet / Saginaw Covering your outdoor faucets during winter weather can help prevent water damage.

As we prepare for colder temperatures in Northwest Fort Worth, it's important to think about outside faucets.  In Tarrant County many homebuilders don't really plan for sub-freezing temperatures, and want to save costs wherever possible.  Their main concern is NOT to prevent water damage, but rather keep things simple and as inexpensive as possible.

A faucet cover is a relatively simple tool that protects your outdoor faucet against freeze damage.  The covers are quick and easy to install. Just place the cover over the faucet and lock it firmly against the house exterior.  This creates an air pocket around the faucet and protects it from freezing temperatures and ice accumulation.

Water Damage Restoration Experts at Your Service

If the outdoor faucet remains exposed in the winter, the water in the pipe could freeze, expand, and burst the pipe. Water will rush out until you shut the water off.  If you are not home, a broken pipe can turn into a water damage disaster in no time.  If this does ever happen to you, then you'll want to give us a call as we are water damage restoration experts.  We've been working throughout Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet for many years, and we can mitigate the water damage and dry the wet materials.

Our team in Haslet is ready to help if you do need water damage restoration services.  However, for a few dollars (generally less than $5), you can protect your outdoor faucets and reduce the chances that you'll suffer water damage.

SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth is your local resource. We recommend putting our number in your mobile phone:  817.232.3333.  You'll have it handy should you ever need our services.

Fire Damage Home Inventory App | Prepare Now for Disaster Recovery | Haslet | Fort Worth | Saginaw SMART Phone apps make home inventory process simple

Disasters happen every day.  Our team at SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth has had the opportunity to help many people, often on the worst day of their lives after a fire strikes their home.  We always start with the most immediate areas of concern first: safety of all the family members, security for the property, and then mitigating damage as much as possible.  Depending on the situation, we can often dry out the existing structure without a huge reconstruction project.  It all depends on what happened, how long any water remained standing and how long before we were called into action.   During the mitigation process, we are often able to restore personal belongings as well.  Many times, the simple process of drying everything out and cleaning off any residue will restore items to a usable condition.  However, there are often considerable amounts of personal goods that are beyond repair and must simply be discarded and replaced.   We can assist homeowners with this process by working with them and their insurance agent to define the damage and outline a reimbursement.  This process is simplified when a homeowner has an inventory of their personal property.  In an ideal situation, there will be photographs, descriptions, and proofs of purchase for the items.  The more information you have, the better, and there are many automation tools available today to assist. The key to this process is taking an inventory BEFORE disaster strikes.  You might check with your agent to determine what they recommend if they have any tools you can use.  We did identify 5 companies that offer such tools.  We included their links below, and some relevant information about reviews, recent updates, etc.  We recommend trying out a few different apps, and try to enter information on one room in your home and see how it goes.  Mobile apps will often have a website companion site that can be useful in managing and updating information.  Spending some time now can help you save time later.  Instead of having to come up with an inventory after you’ve lost everything and aren’t thinking straight, you’ll have a detailed report to hand over to the agent and adjuster.  This will allow you to focus on the thing that matters to you most - your family.  We’ll worry about the structure, and do our very best to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage Prevention: Preparing your Northwest Fort Worth Home for Winter Weather

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Damage Prevention: Preparing your Northwest Fort Worth Home for Winter Weather When your NW Fort Worth home is prepared for winter weather, you can have fun outside in the snow.

As cold winter weather sets in here in Saginaw, Haslet, and Rhome, it can have a huge impact on your home if you are not properly prepared. Heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet, snow, or ice - all have the potential to cause serious property damage. When you take a little time to become prepared, you will feel more comfortable and help prevent costly damage to your home this winter.

Check your trees for weak limbs and branches too close to the roof or windows. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries. Remove the branches which are too close enough to your home.

Inspect your porches and patios for drainage problems and slippery areas. Proper drainage is important to alleviate flood hazard potential from rainy weather. Install mats or non-slip surfaces where water could be present.

Clear leaves and debris out of your rain gutters and downspouts, and make sure they are working properly.  Direct gutter downspouts away from the structure. Leaves, acorns, and other debris can obstruct the flow of water along the gutters and through the downspouts which  can lead to roof damage and water leaking into your house.

Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water faucets to drip when outside temperatures are below 32 degrees. Leave the cabinet doors open allowing inside air to circulate around pipes. Cover your outdoor faucets to protect them. Water that freezes inside a pipe can cause the pipe to crack or break, and then when the ice melts, water can damage your home.

At SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth we are here when you need us. Call 817.232.3333 anytime.

Water Damage Restoration Process in Saginaw, Haslet, Fort Worth TX

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Damage Restoration Process in Saginaw, Haslet, Fort Worth TX This clogged sink in Fort Worth, TX caused water damage in a two story home.

Water damage should not be taken lightly. Whether from a burst pipe, foundation leak, clogged toilet, flood, or any other source, water damage can be hazardous to health and costly to repair if immediate action is not taken. Waiting to call can lead to wood rot of floorboards and wood wall studs, mold growth in drywall, and permanent damage of furnishings.

Call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth at 817.232.3333 right away so we can provide water mitigation services. This is what you can expect:

  • When water damage is detected, the homeowner should call immediately, day or night. Water damage can get infinitely worse in a short span of time, so the issue needs to be addressed by a certified professional right away. Water damage will only escalate and become more costly the longer it remains untreated.
  • A technician will come to inspect the home and do a damage assessment.  This will include identifying the source of the water and what type of water it is. Each room will be carefully checked to see if it has been affected by water damage.

There are 3 categories of water:

Category 1 – clean water. This would be water from a tub that overflows or a broken water supply line. It poses minimal risk to humans.

Category 2 – grey water. Water from a dishwasher or washing machine would fall under this category.  This water is considered significantly contaminated and could cause sickness in humans.

Category 3 – black water.  This water could be from sewage, ground surface water, or standing water. Black water is considered grossly contaminated as it likely contains harmful bacteria that can cause severe illness in humans and animals.

  • After the assessment is completed, a plan is generated. Many times the first step will be water extraction. This is done through industrial strength wet/dry vacuums and submersible pumps. Carpets and carpet pads are inspected and removed if determined to be beyond repair. Moisture detectors and infrared cameras are used to detect pockets of water that may be hidden in cracks and crevices.
  • Removing the water is not enough. Flooring and walls retain moisture, and they need to be dried in an efficient manner so as to prohibit mold growth. Materials that are contaminated or non-restorable will be removed. Through the use of commercial grade dehumidifiers and air movers, as well as application of antimicrobial treatment, customers can rest assured knowing their home and belongings will soon return to acceptable industry standards of dryness.
  • The final step in water damage management is restoration. Some furnishings or structural elements of the home may not be salvageable. Restoration professionals will return the home to its previous condition by replacing carpeting, flooring, insulation, or dry wall, or even reconstructing parts of the home destroyed by water damage.

Left untreated, the damage caused by a water emergency escalates at an alarming rate, which can leave a house unsafe and pose serious health risks. That is why fast water damage restoration is so important. The sooner a homeowner calls, the sooner experienced technicians can stop the progression of damage, saving customers thousands in repairs and getting them back to living in a safe and healthy home.

Flood Damage from Rising Water in NW Fort Worth, Texas

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Flood Damage from Rising Water in NW Fort Worth, Texas Flood water has left a mess in this dining room in Fort Worth, Texas.

Experiencing a flood in Texas is a frightening ordeal. Flooding is a distinct type of water damage because it is water rising up over areas that are not usually submerged, and up into your home. The water is contaminated, and the damage is not covered by regular homeowner’s insurance policies. It’s devastating to see one’s belongings immersed in standing water. Some of the damages that occur from a flood are immediate and obvious, such as a couch that is drenched or books that are waterlogged. Other types of damage aren’t instantly apparent.

Here is a look at the general timeline of how flood damage progresses:

Within the First Hour

This is the emergency stage. The flood damage during this stage is obvious. There is rushing or standing water in the house, and household items and furniture are submerged. Contact SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth at 817.232.3333 to set an appointment for as soon as the water recedes. Our company specializes in water damage restoration in NW Fort Worth, Saginaw, Haslet, and the nearby communities. We will start the process of water extraction and address the restoration that needs to occur.

Within 24 Hours

A homeowner may think that if the water recedes or is removed quickly enough, the leftover moisture can be left to air dry and the homeowner’s possessions will be able to be salvaged. However, without professionals to evaluate the residence and assess the damage, there will likely be lasting repercussions. For instance, any water that was absorbed into wooden furniture can cause the wood to splinter or swell and weaken the structure. Also, a pervasive odor will likely start to be noticeable as carpets, fabrics, and walls will still be saturated with moisture. Untreated, the damage will continue to escalate. IICRC standard is for porous materials affected by flood water to be removed and disposed of. Call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth to handle the demolition and tear-out as well as treating your home with antimicrobial and drying out the structure.

Within a Week

Once a week passes, the odor will likely be more prevalent. Without professionals to handle the drying process, items such as carpets, drywall, and wood floors will have remained wet too long which invited mold and bacteria to grow. The water saturation by this point has also likely started to cause a chemical breakdown of wood fixtures, drywall, and insulation.

Long-Term Effects

The progression and extent of the water damage will vary depending on the length of time the flood water was in the home, how quickly water was extracted, and how long it took for most of the moisture to dissipate. Some damage that may appear are swollen or bowed wood floors and wood furniture that is structurally compromised, warped, or rotted. Flood damage can leave the home unsafe for inhabitants and can be very costly to fix.

The effects of a flood are felt long after the water is removed. Mold growth and structural weakening of furniture and floors are two of the effects that can’t be seen at the outset but will wreak major havoc on a family’s health and home. This is why immediate water mitigation is so important. Your experienced professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth are available around the clock to deal with the devastating effects of a flood. They will address the potential hazards, both seen and unseen, to restore your family’s home and peace of mind.

Cold winter weather is here in NW Fort Worth! Check your furnace today!

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

General Cold winter weather is here in NW Fort Worth! Check your furnace today! Make sure your home's HVAC system is thoroughly checked each autumn before you use the heater, and each spring before you use the air conditioner.

North Texas residents have been cranking the air conditioning for several months now, so not too many people have been worried about their furnaces.  However, cooler temperatures are just beginning to affect our local communities near Haslet and Saginaw, and if you wait to turn on your furnace until a freezing cold day, you may have to spend some time shivering in a cold house waiting for a technician to come.  The next time you have a few minutes, just turn on your heating system to make sure it's working.  Listen for the sound of the coil turning on, and then the fan pumping the heated air through your home.  Make sure vents are open where you want them, and you should be in good shape.  If you suspect a problem, then finding out now would enable you to schedule a technician when their schedule is open.

We know reputable companies in the area through the local chambers of commerce, so if you're in need of a referral, please call our office or your Chamber of Commerce.

Check-Up Service

Another idea on this topic, is to sign up for a bi-annual HVAC system check-up service. Essentially, this is setting up your heating and air conditioning on a subscription service.  A technician will typically check your units in the spring and fall, and make sure everything is working as expected.  Many companies will then give priority attention to your call if you ever have a problem in the summer or winter.  This is a nice perk to be able to jump to the front of the line if your air conditioning goes out in August during our week-long, triple-digit heat waves!

Natural Gas Service? Get a Carbon Monoxide Detector

If you have gas service in your home, it's critical to have a working carbon monoxide detector. Sometimes equipment fails or lines can crack. Since carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas, you may not realize you have a problem until it's too late.  The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are described as "flu-like," and may include headaches, dizziness, weakness, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. This is an inexpensive, but critical, part of your home preparedness planning so take the time to purchase and install a carbon monoxide detector, especially if you have gas appliances.

Identifying Signs of Mold Damage in your NW Tarrant County Home

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Identifying Signs of Mold Damage in your NW Tarrant County Home Mold damage was found in behind wood paneling in a utility closet in Fort Worth, TX.

Black mold not only invades and damages your home, but it can also affect the health of your family.  Some varieties of mold may not be a concern to healthy individuals, while other strains of mold produce mycotoxins. There are some key signs of black mold that may help homeowners or renters identify the toxin. Here are the top three signs of black mold.

Water Damage

Mold thrives on water and humidity. If water damage is found in a house, it is very possible that black mold will be found with it. Rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens are especially susceptible to mold growth because of the high humidity in the atmosphere. Mold tends to grow near leaking pipes and condensation because it requires the presence of water. Call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth out to your home to check for sources of moisture and to mitigate water damage as soon as you notice a problem. In North Texas, water damage that is left to dry out on it’s own often results in mold damage.

Musty Smell

Often times, mold has a smell. If there are certain rooms of your Haslet or Saginaw home that have odor that seems musty or a little off (some people describe it as a mildew smell), it could be mold. Black mold can grow just about anywhere if the conditions are right, so even if it’s a room where mold growth seems unlikely, it is still a good idea to get it checked.

Seeing Mold

This common sign seems obvious, but if you think you are seeing mold damage in your home, then you are probably correct. Mold may be black or dark in color; sometimes it is fuzzy; and sometimes there are white threads or clusters of small dark specks. Make sure to check bathrooms, kitchens, and other humid rooms regularly for mold. Finding and treating mold is preferable to developing symptoms from it and wondering what the problem is.

Look for a mold assessment company to help identify mold damage in your home. Then to remove the mold, you will contact a mold remediation contractor. There are many mold assessment companies and mold remediation contractors in and around Fort Worth. SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth is a mold remediation contractor.

The best way to control mold growth is to control moisture. Set your thermostat to keep the indoor relative humidity low, or use a residential dehumidifier in damp areas of your home.

Black mold can be a very dangerous substance. It’s important to be aware of the signs of mold to prevent, identify, and treat it.  Black mold is often visible and can be smelled, so you suspect mold damage in your home call SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth at 817.232.3333 to set up an appointment.

Mold Effects in Northwest Tarrant County

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold Effects in Northwest Tarrant County Mold is used in making wine, cheese, and bread. But mold growing in your Saginaw or Haslet home make cause negative health effects.

People have a sort of love/hate relationship with mold. Some mold is safe for you. For example, many types of cheese are cultured with mold, such as Brie and Blue cheese. Mold is also used for fermenting alcohol and making bread rise. However, some molds can cause negative health effects. Black mold usually refers to toxic types of mold. It is dark in color and may appear in small, black circles. The circles are usually clustered together. When you notice this in your home, you need to schedule mold removal as quickly as possible. Why? For the following reasons:

Quick Growth

The moment your drywall is exposed to water or moisture, it could start growing mold if there are spores present. In fact, in the right conditions, you could notice visible mold within 24-48 hours after water exposure. Black mold will also spread quickly. Mycotoxins from mold may impact the health of people in your home. It's important to catch it as early as possible to prevent it from spreading throughout your home and potentially causing health effects for your family members.

Airborne Spores

Dry black mold spores may become airborne. They get into your body through your nose as you breathe. The spores are microscopic, so you can't see them or know when you're inhaling them. Exposure to mold can cause health effects.

The spores will get into the air when they are disturbed, so it's important to handle mold damaged materials with care. Make sure that you use the proper methods and equipment to prevent mold from spreading to other areas of your home. Fire Damage Holiday Decorating Safety Tips for Residents of Fort Worth, TX For many people in the Northwest Fort Worth area, decorating the Christmas tree is a favorite part of the holiday.

SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth wishes you a safe and happy holiday season!

Every year residents and business owners in Haslet and Saginaw decorate their homes and businesses for the holidays. Seasonal decorations enhance the festive mood of the holidays, but can also be safety hazards. Reduce the risk of fire damage in your home or business by following these simple safety tips.

Decorative Lights

Choose decorative lights that are properly labeled and have been inspected by an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are designed for indoor use only or outdoor use only, so place the lights according to the labeling. Inspect light strands before placing them. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than the number of light strings recommended by the manufacturer. Plug your decorative light strands into a surge protector. Remember to turn off outside decorative lights and Christmas tree lights before leaving or going to bed.

Candles

Candles are widely used throughout the holidays, and statistics show that more than half of all candle fires start because the candles were too close to flammable objects. Consider using flameless candles in your decorating. Keep traditional candles at least 12 inches from any flammable materials, and remember to extinguish candles when leaving a room or going to bed. Use sturdy candle holders that are not likely to tip over. Place candles on clear, uncluttered surfaces.

Christmas Trees

The majority Christmas tree related fires are caused by electrical problems. If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is fire retardant. If you prefer a cut tree, pick a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Make sure that the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lamps. Do not place your Christmas tree in front of an exit. Make sure the tree has plenty of water every day. Dried-out trees can be a fire hazard and should not be left in the home or garage, or stored leaning against the exterior of your home. After the holidays, properly dispose of your cut tree right away.

Enjoy the holiday season!

Commercial Emergency Water Extraction Specialists - Fort Worth, TX | Restaurant Bathroom Cleanup - Saginaw, TX | Water Damage Restoration Specialists - Alliance Overflowing Urinal at a Restaurant

We've all faced it at some point in our lives, the dreaded situation of water flowing over the bowl in the bathroom!  It's one thing if it happens in your own home.  You're typically able to pull the water shut off, take care of business and clean up relatively quickly.

Things get trickier when it happens in your business.   Is a customer going to notify you if they clog a toilet, or will they quietly exit the restaurant knowing the destruction that waits for the next person?  How about if a sewer problem results in a back up overnight, and you walk in the next day to find a disaster?

These scenarios are much more complicated to clean up, and can potentially be hazardous.  Beyond that, it may prevent you from being able to open your establishment at all until it's cleaned up.

I remember this situation recently at a Starbucks in Saginaw.  I had planned a meeting there at 10a, and found the doors to be locked, and two cheery baristas waiting outside offering up iced coffee.  Iced coffee?  I'm not sure why this is a thing, but needless to say I was very disappointed I didn't have access to HOT coffee and watched about 30 people try to gain access to the restaurant in the hour I talked to my client.  Imagine how much revenue was lost during the time they had to keep their doors locked.

Our experts at SERVPRO are IICRC certified, and know how to deal with such situations quickly and thoroughly.  It may involve biohazard suits, but depending on the situation, it may be prudent for us to use these.  We'll clean up the mess, discard of the waste in an approved manner, and then disinfect the area.  We'll even remove any flooring or walls that may need to be replaced, but hopefully cleaning and drying will do the trick.

Our teams will assess the situation, suggest a plan, and keep you in the loop about our progress, and any complications discovered during the clean up.  We recommend storing our number in your phone now: 817.232.3333.  This is the second best number to know after an emergency other than 911!  We'll do our very best to make it "Like it never even happened." and enable you to return to business.

Fire Damage Safety Tips for Deep Frying a Turkey - Fort Worth, TX | Fire Damage Restoration Experts - Haslet, TX | Fire Prevention Tips - Saginaw Deep Frying a Turkey in Fort Worth, TX

Nothing says Thanksgiving in Texas like deep frying a turkey!  As a fire damage restoration specialist, it would likely make the most sense to encourage you to fry the bird up right in your garage, or why not the kitchen?  You're careful, right?  There's no way your curious cat won't try to tip over the boiling oil and spread it all through the kitchen....

While we are experts at cleaning up after such a disaster, we would rather spend Thanksgiving with our families, too, so we thought we'd share a few tips we found online.  However, since you've taken the time to read this far, why not store our number in your phone in case you need it: 817.232.3333.  Remember, you would call us AFTER the fire is out.  If you see flames, call 911 FIRST!  Once the fire department says it's safe to begin cleaning up, then call us and we'll assess the situation, and make a plan.  Here's what you can do to hopefully avoid the situation altogether:

Turkey Frying Tips from the Fire Restoration Experts

  1. Don't Setup Near the House - In fact, make sure you're about 10 feet away from any structure, keep animals and kids far away, and don't leave it unattended.  If you need a BRB, phone a friend, and have them stand watch.
  2. Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry.  If there's excess water, then it can cause the oil to bubble vigorously and overflow.  It could then spill on the burner and cause a fire.
  3. Use a flat area.  The oil in the pot must be even and steady at all times to be safe.  Keep it on a flat, level surface and be careful with the amount of oil you use.
  4. Temperature monitoring is key.  Be cautious as the lid and handle can be hot and cause burns.  Make sure you have a way to keep track of the oil's temp as many fryers don't have their own thermostats.
  5. Be Prepared.  Just in case...   Have a fire extinguisher available (multipurpose, dry-powder) handy just in case the oil catches.

It's hard to be ready for everything that can go wrong, but if you take a few extra minutes to plan, then you can be enjoying some very tasty turkey while watching the Cowboys win on Thursday!

If you do have any trouble that gets out of hand, call 911 first! Then call us...  our number is answered 24/7/365 and we'll head your way as soon as we can.  In the meantime, be safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Mold Remediation Water Damage in Strange Places - Fort Worth, TX | Mold Damage Remediation Experts for Alliance, TX | Water Cleanup Experts for Saginaw, TX Water Damage Example

We dealt with a strange mold remediation situation recently and wanted to share the story.  We had a client call and ask us to come out and look at some staining underneath a cabinet in their kitchen.  It was a very strange situation, as we normally deal with water damage right near the sink or dishwasher in the kitchen.

We started to examine it, and concluded that we would have to dig into the wall to determine what was happening.  As we removed the drywall, we soon found that the problem was bigger then the stain visible on the outside of the wall.  We immediately noticed that musty smell and soon saw evidence of mold. Since our crews are specially trained to meet the standards established by the IICRC, we knew what to look for and what to do next.

Water Damage Restoration Job Becomes a Mold Remediation Job

These two area often go hand-in-hand because mold loves to grow where water has been left to collect.  What we found behind the cabinet was that the original contractor had punctured a water supply line during the original installation of the cabinets.  Since the nail remained in place, the leak was very slow, and was trapped because of the insulation that was packed in around the supply line. Over the years, water found a way, and more and more escaped and collected in the insulation giving the mold an opportunity to get established and grow.

Our crews came to the job knowing that mold may be an issue, and had the right equipment, training, and safety gear needed.  They removed the damaged drywall, cabinet and insulation and disinfected the area.  Our team worked with the insurance company to outline the problem, agree to a solution and oversaw the reconstruction as well.

It didn't all happen in one day, but in a short amount of time, we identified the problem, cleaned it up, disinfected it, dried it out and restored it.  Our goal is to make you feel "Like it never even happened."  The homeowner agreed, and was glad that they don't have to worry about whatever potential effects of mold exposure may have.

If you ever see one of those weird water stains, just give us a call and have us check it out, because you never know what you might find.  Call our office at 817.232.3333.

Storm Damage Storm Damage Restoration Experts - Fort Worth, TX | Water Damage Cleanup Specialists - Saginaw, TX | Hail Damage Cleanup for Haslet, TX Hail aka Sky Diamonds by Roofers and Collision shops!

Winter can bring some interesting weather to North Texas.  Some days, like today as I write this article, it's 80 degrees!  I see pictures of hunters in Michigan and New York all bundled up because of the cold in mid-November, and I'm still in short-sleeves and shorts!

However, I've seen some crazy storms here, and the worse ones usually involve ice in some form or fashion.  I've learned recently that roofers and body shop owners have an interesting name for hail:  sky diamonds!  They may not come out and say this while inspecting your roof or car for damage, but when they hear that there's hail in the forecast, they get a special twinkle in their eyes.

Hail Damage Usually Leads to Water Damage

If the hail damage is significant enough to cause holes, or damage roofing tiles, then water will likely get in and start to access your walls, ceilings, etc.  The first step in these situations is to get the roof tarped and mitigate the on-going damage from having more water getting into your home.  We'll let the roofers work with what they know best, and we'll focus on getting you dried out and on the road to recovery.

In many instances, we can dry out the walls and ceilings and not have to remove any debris.  Our teams know what to look for, and will examine a job, document the scene with pictures and then work with your insurance company on a solution that's clean, safe and acceptable to all.  The ultimate goal is to return your home "Like it never even happened."

We recommend taking a moment now and storing our number in your phone: 817.232.3333.  If there's anything life threatening, then be sure to call 911 first.  Once you can be sure your family is safe, then call us to come in and stop the on-going problem with tarps, etc. and figure out a path forward with fans, dryers, mops, whatever it takes!  We're the experts when it comes to recovering after the storm.

Water Damage Water Damage Time Bombs in Your Home | Expert Tips from the Water Damage Restoration Experts for Fort Worth, TX Rubber Washing Machine Hoses

As the water damage restoration experts for Tarrant County, we've pretty much seen it all, and many times, we've seen it repeatedly.  One job we clean up frequently are burst washer machine hoses.  These are typically rubber supply line hoses that are constantly under pressure.  They have a lifespan of about 5 years, and will often break in the middle of the night or while you're at work.  Gone unnoticed, such a break will dump hundreds of gallons of water in your home quickly. One reference I found mentioned that washer machine hoses are responsible for $150 million dollars in damage each year!

Most pros recommend replacing these hoses every three to five years with stainless-steel braided hoses.  They generally cost less than $20 are are reinforced, with a flexible steel mesh.  For a few dollars more, you can get hoses that have a check valve, and they automatically stop when they sense a drop in pressure.  A $30 investment can save thousands in damage.

Water Bomblet - Ice Maker Supply Line

While the water line for the ice maker isn't as big, nor is it supplied with the same amount of pressure, it's usually a pretty simple plastic hose.  While you're in the process of upgrading your washer machine hoses, we also recommend getting a stainless-steel braided hose for the ice maker.  Here's one on Amazon for $25!

You may wonder why we offer such tips on our blog when it’s our job to clean up the messes?  What we’ve found is that there are plenty of messes, and these articles won’t likely solve them all.  What we do hope is that we’re able to establish ourselves as an expert in the community.  Perhaps you found us after the fact and need help, or you’ve been wondering about that hose, and how often they break.  Even if you take our advice, your neighbor may not.  We’d greatly appreciate your referral to them!

If you do ever have a problem, then be sure to give us a call at 817.232.3333.  We have the equipment, know-how and specialized training to restore you back to normal quickly and safely.

Fire Damage Grease Fire Tips for Fort Worth, TX Restaurants and Cooks | Haslet and Saginaw Fire Restoration Experts Commercial Grease Fire

I'm sure you've heard this by now, but grease fires are VERY different from other types of fires.  Whether you're at home, or working in a commercial restaurant or helping to make burritos at church on Sunday, knowing the basics can help you in a crisis!

Grease Fire - Action Plan

When grease does catch, here are some of the things you CAN do to help:

  • Put the lid on the pan to choke out the fire.  Fire needs oxygen, and if you can eliminate its source, it will burn out.
  • Use baking soda to smother the fire.  Flour and other items will NOT work.
  • Use a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher  A commercial kitchen should have these handy, and you can get one for your home from Amazon from the link above.
  • Call 911

Grease Fire  - Don't

  • Don't use water to attempt to extinguish the flames.  It will simply spread the fire, and won't help.
  • Don't attempt to move it.  The grease could splash, and you might spread the fire, or burn yourself in the process.
  • Use anything other than a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher or baking soda.  Other solutions will NOT help!

One the fire is out, assess the situation.  Depending on the severity, it may be prudent to call us at SERVPRO to check it out.  We have IICRC training to understand fire damage, and we know the best ways to mitigate it.  Put our number in your phone today so you have it handy, 817 232 3333.   When disaster strikes, get somewhere safe, call 911 first, and then call SERVPRO!

Commercial Retail Emergency Water Extraction - NW Fort Worth, TX | Commercial Water Damage Remediation - Saginaw, TX Retail Water Backup in Tarrant County, Texas

Excess water can impact people's lives in a variety of ways, whether you're dealing with a situation at your home or business.  Consider the situation of a flavored popcorn store in Tarrant County.  Something went awry in their building, and by morning, water had accumulated so that it was sitting above the bottom rail of their counter.

The water from their location, spread into their neighbor and affected their business as well.  Regardless of the cause, the main thing that a retail business needs to do is to get dried out, quickly, so that they can conduct business normally.  It's one thing when you may not be able to use your own home for a few days when dealing with emergency water extraction, but a business has a broader impact.  They have a cost associated with not being able to use their facility, but then there's the lost revenue from not being able to conduct business as the normally would.

Retail Shopping Impacted by Water Backup

In the case of this popcorn store, the bulk of their products were off the floor already, and undamaged by the water.  Their biggest problem was to get their display cabinets dried out fast and thoroughly to avoid any permanent damage.

As you can see in the picture, they used fans and propped up the center displays to allow the air to blow through and around them.  They were unable to operate for just one day, and were back to business as normal (or close to it) by the weekend.

They had the expense of getting dried out, and then had to sort things out between their own insurance company and the building's owner.  Luckily, they could get the water extracted soon after they found it, and got dried out before any permanent damage was done to their displays or equipment.

This is exactly the type of situation that SERVPRO is geared for.  Whether the situation is limited to a 1000-square-foot retail store, or a 50,000-square-foot department store, we would be ready to assist.  We have substantial equipment at the ready at each of our locations, and then each franchisee has access to emergency help from the greater network of SERVPRO professionals.  We stand ready 24/7/365 for just about any emergency, and we'll make it "Like it never even happened. ®"

In this example, the homeowner started to notice a funny smell in their home.  It was that tell-tale "musty odor" that lets you know there's a problem, but you can't tell exactly what or where the problem is.

The client started moving things around and finally noticed that mold had begun developing behind where their son's bed was placed in his room.  They didn't realize that the window outside his room was leaking, and mold started to develop.  They knew that having mold in their home, especially near where their son spends 8 hours or more each day is probably not a good thing.

Our role in mold remediation is not to guess about the medical problems that may or may not stem from it, but work to remove it.  As you can tell from this picture, something doesn't look right, and it needs to be removed, and sanitized.

Mold Remediation and Structural Restoration

Our goal in any situation is to limit the cost of restoring your home back to the way it was.  We seek to find a balance between cleaning walls and floors, and removing affected carpeting, drywall, and support structures.  Our crews that work on mold remediation have received specialized training and are certified by the IICRC.

As a result, our crews know what to look for, and can properly determine if the affected areas can be cleaned and sanitized, or must be removed and rebuilt.  In some cases, they may attempt to clean the affected areas, and determine afterward if that will suffice or if further construction will be necessary.  We will discuss our plans with you and your insurance company and determine the best AND SAFEST way to proceed for all involved.  At SERVPRO, we seek to make it “Like it never even happened.”

If you smell that funny smell in your home, have us out to conduct a mold inspection so that we can determine next steps.  Call us today at 817.232.3333.

Cleaning Break-In Clean Up | Crime Scene Clean Up Specialists for Fort Worth | Saginaw TX | Haslet Homeless People have Invaded a Home and Enjoy an Impromptu Picnic

I was confronted with an idea about crime scene clean up I hadn't thought of while watching a TV Show recently.  In the Season 2 Premier of the show Baskets on the FX Network, the main character has tagged along with a group of homeless clowns.  They travel on empty freight trains, and arrived at one town in the rain.  They soon find a home with no car in the driveway and newspapers piled up on the porch and realize that no one is home.

One small window break later allows the group quick access, and soon they're enjoying quick a picnic at the dining room table.  Meanwhile their clothes are drying on makeshift drying line strung through the house.  Once they're done with dinner, someone raids the medicine cabinet, finds some prescriptions the homeowners left behind, and soon everyone is asleep.

The main character, Baskets, has a moment of reflection while they're eating and asks the ring-leader, "What happens when these people come home?" to which he answers, "We'll be long gone, and State Farm's Home Insurance will clean it all up!"

I would hope that this isn't a common occurrence, but as you watch the situation play out, it's clear that this probably happens more often than we think.  Strangers in our homes that don't have a care in the world doing whatever they want without fear of consequence.

The clean up crew at SERVPRO has seen it all, whether we need to clean up after some uncaring hobos or even take care of a biohazard situation after a more heinous crime.  We have the proper equipment to handle the clean up safely, efficiently and effectively.  We can disinfect the carpeting, furniture, etc doing all we can to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Home Inventory App for Disaster Recovery Preparedness - Fort Worth - Haslet - Saginaw

12/30/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Home Inventory App for Disaster Recovery Preparedness - Fort Worth - Haslet - Saginaw Know Your Stuff App Screen Shot

Many disaster preparedness checklists include the step of making a home inventory.  This seems like a daunting task to document the items in your home, but as you start, it's clear that taking the time to do this would be valuable.  There are a number of tools available on the market, and one in particular seemed worthy of a review.  Today I tried out "Know Your Stuff" from the Insurance Information Institute.

I have an iPhone 7 Plus, and am running the latest iteration of the operating system, iOS 10.2.  The app name is "Know Your Stuff" and was initially released November 19, 2015, and was last updated December 9, 2016, version 2.1.3.  It was easy to establish a new account, and I was able to access my information on the app, or via a web browser on my desktop.

Home Inventory App - The Good

The app seems to have most of the elements you'd want to have in a home inventory tool.  It allows you to take a picture of the item in question, add the make, model, serial numbers, description, notes, and more for every item.  You could also easily group things together like "pots and pans" and just reference the brand name of the set.

The app allows you to store information for multiple homes, and create multiple rooms within each home so that it's very organized as to where everything is.

Home Inventory App - The Bad

The biggest downside I found was that it would not allow me to add pictures directly from the app.  As with other iOS apps, it includes the feature to "take a photo" or "Choose from Photo Library."  I tried about a dozen times, and it never allowed me to "take a photo." The app always crashed at this point, and anything I was working on was lost.  However, if I took the picture first, then went into the app, and picked "choose from Photo Library" then it worked fine. It seemed to upload the picture at full resolution as each photo takes a while to upload.  This is an area where I think the developers could get some input from underwriters and have a better understanding of what clarity of photo is valuable in assessing a claim.  I'm guessing that having a 5MB photo of a $300 computer printer isn't really necessary.

Home Inventory App - Considerations

As you think about which app to use, the biggest thing to worry about is the time you invest in taking the inventory, and will the information be accessible when you need it.  I entered a couple of items, and created a report and it was a nice, robust, detailed list of items.  I could envision taking a home inventory with a couple hundred entries and saving the spreadsheet myself in Dropbox, iCloud or some other secure cloud storage.  This would keep the inventory safe should a disaster strike.

The other thing to consider is the app developer and their commitment to updating it.  In this instance, the Insurance Information Institute has been around for nearly 60 years and includes a huge list of participants.  I would expect that they're going to continue to support and enhance this tool so that it will be around for many years.  The photos from the report I downloaded were saved on Amazon's cloud servers, and I would believe that these will be safe and secure for the foreseeable future.

What's the bottom line?  I'd give this app a B for now.  It seems to have most of the features I'd want to have, but needs to be able to take pictures while I'm adding items.  If you find another inventory app worthy of review, please let us know and we'll check it out!

Living in Texas means living and working in environments with air conditioning.  It's hard to imagine how the first Texans lived here before AC was invented!  Since most Texas homes don't have basements, air conditioning evaporator coils are typically in the AC cabinet in the attic.  Left unchecked, this condensation can collect in the pan, and if the drainage tube is blocked, it will overflow into your house causing water damage.

Prevent Water Damage Before it Occurs

In hot, humid climates like ours, these drain tubes can become blocked with algae that may grow.  Once this is blocked, the water will collect in the pan, but this is typically only about 1" high and will only contain the overflow for so long.  Once the water leaks over the edge, it can flow onto your ceiling, and down the walls damaging drywall and causing water damage.

As water accumulates, it creates a perfect environment for mildew and mold to develop which can be dangerous for your family.  If this should happen to you, then the experts at SERVPRO can be on hand quickly.  We have specialized equipment to dry out the area, and can bring in experts to review the HVAC system and make sure the drainage line is clear.  Our crew can remove any damaged drywall sections, and get the area prepared for contractors to come in and restore the walls.

Recommended Prevention Tips

The simplest recommendation is to contact an HVAC professional in your area to review your system, and make sure the drainage tube is clear and working properly.  Many HVAC companies have regular maintenance programs that will include bi-annual inspections, and often give you priority service should you have a problem.  If you would like a recommendation, feel free to call our office, and we'll be happy to recommend some professionals in the area that we trust.

If you have the do-it-yourself mentality, then there are many videos and tools online that offer advice on how to inspect and clean this tube.  It's important to look for solutions for attic-based systems as other areas that use AC typically put their units in the basement.  One such relevant article we found while researching this article was from an AC professional in Houston. Click here to read their tips.

Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from Restoration Experts for Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet

Storm Damage Storm Damage Preparedness Tips from Restoration Experts for Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet Tornado Creating Storm Damage in Texas!

One thing Northerners are quick to point out is that they don't often have to deal with the violent storms we get in the Spring and Fall in North Texas.  (Nor do they see many armadillos or rattlesnakes!)  Unlike a hurricane, there typically isn't much warning, and before you know it, you're dealing with storm damage to clean up.

We're often interested in getting the best price, but around here, we really need to find the best value because nearly every Texan has to deal with storm damage at some point.  Ask your agent what your coverage is like if you suffer storm damage.  What about flooding?  If you don't live in a flood zone, it's relatively inexpensive to carry flood insurance, and you'll be covered.  Your agent will have the details, and if you need a referral, please give us a call.

The next project to tackle is to take an inventory of your personal property.  The Insurance Information Institute has a free app for iOS and Android that can simplify the process. Click here for details.

Take a look around your home, and make sure that everything is secure.  Make a visual inspection of your roof and look for any potential problems.  Make sure any carports or porches are secured to the home, and their posts are fastened to the ground.

Many roofers will offer a free inspection of your roof.  Make sure you get a reputable referral.  If something sounds fishy, then it may be prudent to have a home inspector out.  While they often review a home prior to purchase, they often review homes that have been lived in a while and can make recommendations on maintenance.

Seal the windows and doors.  North Texas weather has a tendency to damage the seals over time, and it's prudent to go back over these periodically.

Finally, as you watch the weather, when you know there may be trouble coming, make sure the yard is clear.  Secure any furniture, make sure gardening tools are put away.  Anything left out can become a missile in high winds, and a few minutes of care can remove these dangers.

Hopefully these tips will be useful to you and your family.  If you do suffer storm damage, then we're here to help.  Call us at 817.232.3333.  We'll work with you and your insurance company to help make it... "Like it never even happened."

One example is a friend of the family who had a number of cats.  She became less able to take care of herself over time, and that translated to the cats, too.  We anticipated a problem as it was evident on her clothing that her home had taken on a distinctive smell.  Whenever we went somewhere, she would always meet us on the sidewalk and would never let us into her home.  After she passed, we soon realized what happened as the cats were allowed to urinate everywhere.  The home had to be gutted, and sections of the flooring replaced.

In the end, the structure itself was saved. It made sense to repair the home after we completed disinfecting it.  We removed the smell of the cats urine that had penetrated the home.

If you ever have to deal with a similar situation, please call in an expert.  Dealing with hazardous biological materials can be dangerous to you and your family.  It's important to be protected during the clean up process, and we at SERVPRO have the right equipment on hand.  We've also invested training in our staff so that we know how to do it right.  Put our number in your mobile phone today: 817.232.3333.  Call on your neighbors at SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth, and we'll be out to help in a flash!

Fire Damage Fire Damage Restoration - Prevention Tips for Fort Worth, Haslet and Saginaw Fire Extinguishers Ready for Sale - Fire Damage Prevention

One of our specialties is helping people recover from a fire in their home.  This is an extremely difficult time as people have often lost numerous personal belongings.  Their home may be compromised, and they might have to leave for a while during the fire damage restoration process.

As you think about fire prevention in your home, remember that the most important thing is to get yourself and loved ones to safety.  Your home and belongings can be replaced, but you can't!

Key Fire Preparedness Tip

We recommend getting a fire extinguisher for the home.  As you consider extinguishers, pay special note as to how they're labelled: A, B, or C.  Each type corresponds to a different type of fire:

  • A: Trash, Wood, Paper
  • B: Liquids, Grease
  • C: Electrical Equipment

Many extinguishers today cover all three types, but it's important to note and understand.  Some extinguishers are refillable, and others are not.  They will be clearly labeled, so keep this in mind as you shop.  It might be worthwhile to get more than one as the National Fire Protection Association recommends you have one for each floor.

Using an extinguisher isn't difficult, but dealing with fire is dangerous, so only attempt this once other family members have been evacuated.  Someone should still plan to call 911 even if you plan to use the fire extinguisher so that a professional can ensure the fire has been completely put out.

Fire Damage Restoration Process

Once the fire has been extinguished, it's time to give us a call.  We have many unique pieces of equipment we can use when cleaning up after a fire.  Even if it's relatively small, there could be water that needs to be removed and dried.  Smoke can leave behind odors, and we have a few options we can use to remove the smell of smoke from your home.  You'd be amazed at how successful we can be at removing the damaged sections and helping you get back to normal.

We recommend putting our number in your phone now so you have it in case of emergency: 817.232.3333.  We're your fire damage restoration experts in Northwest Fort Worth.

Water Damage Water Damage Preservation Tips - Fort Worth - Haslet - Saginaw Exterior faucet cover can help prevent water damage

As we prepare for colder temperatures in Northwest Fort Worth, it's important to think about outside faucets.  Up North, there is typically a shut-off valve in the house, and people will turn off the water there.  Once shut off, they can open the outside faucet, and drain the remaining water.

The problem in Tarrant County is that builders don't really plan for sub-freezing temperatures, and want to save costs wherever possible.  Their main concern is NOT to prevent water damage, but rather keep things simple and as inexpensive as possible.

The cover in the attached picture is a relatively simple tool that should prevent the faucet from freezing.  The covers are generally styrofoam, and have a foam piece that allows you to make it snug against the exterior.  This creates an air pocket around the faucet and protects it from freezing rain would otherwise accumulate.

Water Damage Restoration Experts at Your Service

If the faucet remains exposed, the water in the pipe could freeze.  Water expands once frozen, and can burst the pipe.  These pipes typically do not have their own shut off valve.  Once they go, water will rush out until you turn the water off from within the house or at the main.   If this does ever happen to you, then you'll want to give us a call as we are water damage restoration experts.  We've been working throughout Fort Worth, Saginaw and Haslet for many years, and have dealt with this time and again.  We'll be able to dry out any areas in the home that have been flooded, and remove any debris that may be required.

Once the immediate problem is resolved, it's best to have a licensed plumber repair the pipe.  The finish work can then be completed by a home improvement specialist.  We can help in coordinating these experts if you prefer.

Our team in Haslet is ready to help if you do need water damage restoration services.  However, for a few dollars (generally less than $5), you can protect your faucets and reduce the chances that you'll suffer water damage.

It may seem counter intuitive for us to offer this type of advice, but we'd like to be your local resource for how to prevent a disaster.  We recommend putting our number in your mobile phone:  (817) 232-3333.  This way, you'll have it handy should you have to leave your home in a mad dash because of a storm, fire or some other problem.

Get ready for Heating Season! Check your furnace today!

11/8/2016 (Permalink)

North Texas has been cranking the air conditioning for months now, so not too many people have been worried about their furnaces.  However, cooler temperatures are coming, and if you wait to turn on your furnace until that day, you may have to spend some time in the cold waiting for a technician to come.  The next time you have a few minutes, just turn it on to make sure it's working.  Listen for the sound of the coil turning on, and then the fan pumping the heated air through your home.  Make sure vents are open where you want them, and you should be in good shape.  If you suspect a problem, then finding out now would enable you to call a technician when their schedule is open.

We know reputable companies in the area, so if you're in need of a referral, please call our office.

Check-Up Service

Another idea on this topic, is to sign up for a check-up service.  Essentially. this is setting up your heating and air conditioning on a subscription service.  They will typically check your units in the spring and fall, and make sure everything is working as expected.  Many companies will then give priority attention to your call if you ever have a problem in the summer or winter.  This is a nice perk to be able to jump to the front of the line if you air conditioning goes out in August during our week-long, triple-digit heat waves!

Gas Service? Get a Carbon Monoxide Detector

If you have gas service in your home, it's critical to have a working carbon monoxide detector.  Sometimes equipment can fail, and carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas, and you may not realize you have a problem until it's too late.  This is an inexpensiveness, but critical part of your home preparedness planning so take the time to check it.

Top Reasons to Have a Black Mold Inspection

3/1/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Top Reasons to Have a Black Mold Inspection Black Mold in Fort Worth, TX.

Black mold, is a common problem in homes across the country. It can cause health effects.  It has a similar appearance to several other types of mold, making it difficult to identify. That’s why it is important to have your inspector check for black mold before purchasing a home.

Avoid Health Effects

Uncovering the problem during your inspection gives you the chance to have it corrected before you are exposed to it, so your whole family stays safer by avoiding the potential health effects of mold.

Walk Away from a Dangerous Home

If your inspection uncovers a black mold problem, it gives you the chance to walk away from a potentially negative situation. Some people choose to buy homes with known mold problems and hire a team for black mold removal in Fort Worth. However, these homes aren’t for everyone. If you have a young baby or an elderly person in your family, it can be especially concerning because of the potential health effects.

Spot Water Damage

Another good reason to check for mold when buying a home is because it is often linked to other significant problems. Where mold is present, you will often find other signs of water damage, including stains on the walls or soft spots along the floor. Water damage can even weaken the home’s structure, sometimes from the foundation up. Don’t expect the seller to always disclose this information.

Find Plumbing Damage

Often times mold and water damage are signs of problems with the home’s plumbing system. These problems can be difficult to spot on their own during an inspection, whereas mold is relatively easy to find. If you find a wet patch or mold along a wall, there’s a good chance there is a leaky pipe on the other side. This gives you a good indication of the condition of the plumbing system, and the house’s overall maintenance.

Save Money

Spotting mold during your inspection is a good way to save money on the purchase. In many cases, the seller will drop the price dramatically in order to entice you to buy it. Or the seller may agree to arrange black mold removal services so that you won’t have to pay for the restoration yourself. The same goes for any other water damage or plumbing problems that you encounter during your mold inspection. The more the seller repairs, the less money you’ll have to spend restoring the house after you buy it.

If you believe your future home has a black mold problem, contact the professionals at SERVPRO for more information.

Types of Flood Damage You Can’t See

1/27/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage Types of Flood Damage You Can’t See Water Damage Effects

Experiencing a flood in Texas is a frightening ordeal.

This is the emergency stage, where the flood occurs and water needs to be removed. The flood damage during this stage is obvious. There is rushing or standing water, and household items and furniture are submerged. It is during this emergency stage that a company which specializes in water damage restoration in Fort Worth should be contacted to start the process of water extraction and address the restoration that needs to occur.

Within 24 Hours

A homeowner may think that if the water is removed quickly enough, the leftover moisture can be left to air dry and the homeowner’s possessions will be able to be salvaged.

The progression and extent of the water damage will vary depending on the severity of the flood, how quickly water was extracted, and how long it took for most of the moisture to dissipate. Some of the damages that may appear are wooden floorboards that swell or bow and wood furniture that is structurally compromised as it becomes warped or begins to rot. These damages can leave the home unsafe for inhabitants and can be very costly to fix.

The effects of a flood are felt long after the water is removed. Mold growth and structural weakening of furniture and floors are two of the effects that can’t be seen at the outset but will wreak major havoc on a family’s health and home. This is why expedient water damage restoration is so important. Experienced professionals in the area are available around the clock to deal with the devastating effects of a flood. They will address the potential hazards, both seen and unseen, to restore not only a family’s home, but also their peace of mind.

Why You Shouldn't Wait to Call about Water Damage

Storm Damage Why You Shouldn't Wait to Call about Water Damage Flood Damage

Water damage should not be taken lightly. Whether from a burst pipe, foundation leak, clogged toilet, flood, or any other source, water damage can be hazardous to health and costly to repair if immediate action is not taken. Waiting to call can lead to wood rot of floorboards, mold and mildew growth on fabrics and in drywall, and permanent damage of furnishings.

The following is what can be expected when a call is made for emergency water restoration in Fort Worth:

  1. When water damage is detected, the homeowner should call immediately, day or night. Water damage can get infinitely worse in a short span of time, so the issue needs to be addressed by a certified professional right away. Water damage will only escalate and become more costly the longer it remains untreated.
  1. A technician will come to inspect the home and do a damage assessment.  This will include identifying the source of the water and what type of water it is.

There are 3 categories of water:

Category 1 – clean water. This would be water from a tub that overflows or a broken water supply line. It poses minimal risk to humans.

Category 2 – grey water. Water from a dishwasher or sump pump back up would fall under this category.  This water is considered contaminated and could cause sickness in humans.

Category 3 – black water.  This water could be from sewage, ground surface water, or standing water. Black water is considered highly unsanitary as it likely contains harmful bacteria that can cause severe illness in humans.

  1. After the assessment is completed, a plan is generated, the first step of which will be water extraction. This is done through industrial strength wet/dry vacuums and submersible pumps. Carpets and carpet pads are inspected and removed if determined to be beyond repair. Moisture detectors and infrared cameras are used to detect pockets of water that may be hidden in cracks and crevices.
  1. Removing the water is not enough. Flooring and walls retain moisture, and they need to be dried in an efficient manner so as to prohibit the growth of mold and mildew. Through the use of commercial grade dehumidifiers and air circulators, customers can rest assured knowing their home and belongings reach acceptable industry standards of dryness.
  1. The home is then thoroughly sanitized. This includes the walls, carpeting, furniture, and belongings damaged by water. Without this step, a residence could be plagued with mold and mildew for years to come. The decontamination process performed by certified technicians eliminates this concern for homeowners.
  1. The final step in water damage management is restoration. Some furnishings or structural elements of the home may not be salvageable. The water damage professionals will restore the home to its previous condition by replacing carpeting, flooring, insulation, or dry wall, or even reconstructing parts of the home destroyed by water damage.

Why Black Mold is Dangerous To Your Family

General Why Black Mold is Dangerous To Your Family Black Mold

Some mold is safe for you. For example, many types of Brie cheese comes with mold, and without mold, we wouldn't have yogurt. However, some molds can cause health effects. Black mold is black in color and appears in small, black circles. The circles are usually clustered together. When you notice this in your home, you need to schedule black mold removal as quickly as possible. Why? For the following reasons:

Quick Growth

The moment your drywall is exposed to water or moisture, it could start growing mold. In fact, you could notice mold within 24-48 hours after water exposure. Black mold will also spread quickly. Within a week of its first appearance, there will be enough to impact the health of people in your home. It's important to catch it as early as possible to prevent it from spreading throughout your home and potentially causing health effects for your family members.

Airborne Spores

Black mold spores are airborne. They get into your body through your nose as you breathe. The spores are microscopic, so you can't see them or know when you're inhaling them. As more and more spores get into your body,  it can cause health effects.

The spores will get into the air as you disturb it, so it's important to handle it with care. Make sure that you use the proper equipment to prevent it from getting into your air. Better yet, hire a professional to come help you remove the mold and prevent it from growing anymore.

General Top Signs of Black Mold Black Mold

Black mold is not only annoying and invasive, but it can also impact one’s health.  It is considered a toxic substance, and should be treated as such. There are some key signs of black mold that may help homeowners or renters identify the toxin. Here are the top three signs of black mold.

Water Damage

Black mold thrives on water and humidity. If water damage is found in a house, it is very possible that black mold will be found with it. Rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens are especially susceptible to black mold because of the high humidity in the atmosphere. Like water damage, leaking pipes and condensation can also be signs of black mold because of the presence of water. Making sure there is no mold growing if water damage is found can prevent a lot of problems.

Smell

Often times, black mold has a smell. If there are certain rooms that have a scent that seems a little off, it could be black mold. Black mold can grow just about anywhere if the conditions are right, so even if it’s a room where black mold growth seems unlikely, it is still a good idea to get it checked. There are a lot of companies that can provide services to help identify and remove black mold. There are black mold removal services in Fort Worth and many other areas, especially humid ones.

Seeing Mold

This common sign seems obvious, but seeing black mold or any other questionable dark substance is usually a sign of mold. Make sure to check bathrooms, kitchens, and other humid rooms regularly for mold. Finding and treating mold is preferable to developing symptoms from it and wondering what the problem is.

Black mold can be a very dangerous substance. It’s important to know the signs of black mold to prevent it and catch it.  Black mold is often visible and can be smelled, so if these signs are found, a company that performs black mold removal should be contacted.

Biohazard Cleanup Crews

It’s no fun to think about, but sometimes we come across a situation that requires the expertise of a biohazard cleanup crew.  It’s not that common, and it’s typically not going to involve a crime, but rather just part of life.

My mother had this situation happen to her years ago.  She had a great friend that lived nearby, David, and they would spend time together.  She always referred to themselves as “Jerry and Elaine.”  They would generally meet for coffee or dinner about once a week, but would check in every couple of days to see how the other one was doing.  One time, a couple days had passed since my mother left a message, and she thought something was up.

She went to David’s apartment, and peeked through the window.  From there, she could see that David was on the floor and not moving.  She banged on the door a few times, but feared the worse.  She called the police, and when they got in, they found that David had a heart attack.  He hit his head, and blood was all over the floor.

David did have an adult son, who came and assisted with the arrangements, but my mother was the one who made arrangements to clean the room before his son got there.  This was her first time in needing the services of a biohazard cleanup crew.  They were very polite and professional, dealt with the situation with the proper decorum, and restored the rooms back to normal.

Matthew Hicks and his team at SERVPRO of Northwest Fort Worth are prepared to help you and your family should you ever have a situation like this arise that requires biohazard cleanup professionals.   Take a minute and put their number in your phone now, 817.232.3333.  There is an operator available 24/7.  Whether a loved one has passed away, or you are left dealing with a crime scene clean up situation, SERVPRO can help you.  They have the equipment, tools, and expertise to return your home environment, “Like it never happened”.

General Home Inventory Tools Can Help Prepare for an Insurance Claim Texas Flooding

Plan Ahead to Avoid Headaches Later

North Texas has had more than its fair share of extreme weather this year.  This past May was in fact the wettest May on record! Many people had the unfortunate task of dealing with flooding in and around their homes and businesses.  Our team at SERVPRO was very busy working with our neighbors here in Tarrant County.  Hopefully many people affected by this rare flooding event were covered, and they had some way of reporting the losses to their insurance carriers.

Now that the sunny days are here, it’s a good time to step back and think ahead to the next event where it would be great to have a list of your belongings that would make it quick and easy to submit to an insurance company.  This process is much easier to do when everything is intact, and you have a clear head.  Once you have the data available, then you’ll have great documentation that will make it easier to justify the different replacement values of items in your home or office to a claims processor.  Once you have the inventory taken, you can simply add in new purchases.

One easy way to do this, is to create a video of your home and narrate it as you go.  You can go from room to room, and even read off serial numbers, model information and more.  While you can’t create an instant report from this method, it does give you the information you need if you did need to create a report to submit an insurance claim.  Make sure the video is backed-up or saved off-site so that it’s available in case of emergency.

Home Inventory Tools

There are a variety of online tools to assist you, and a number of smart-phone apps that make it easy to capture still pictures and videos of your home, along with purchase receipts, model and serial numbers and more.  As you consider different tools, make sure to collect at least these key items:

·         Description of the item

·         Serial number

·         Purchase date

·         Estimated value

Once you decide which tool to use, make sure that the information is stored somewhere offsite, and you can easily create a report of your valuables.  As you start the process, it would be advisable to enter in about ten items, and submit a report to your insurance agent to confirm that it has the information required to document the item.  Doing an initial sample will help you justify the time you’ll spend on the full inventory.  Once you’re ready to move forward, create an action plan to move from room to room, and tackle one room per week until you’re done.

Give special consideration to high-value items like jewelry and collectibles.  You may need additional documentation for these, and get additional coverage from your agent.

As for the types of tools available, check with your insurance agent first.  There are a number of companies who have their own tools, and these are generally made available at no additional cost.  Here are three that are readily available:

·         Allstate Digital Locker works on the web, iPhone, or Android.

·         State Farm HomeIndex works on the web, but can easily be accessed by a mobile device, too.

·         Liberty Mutual Home Gallery lets you take a photo inventory using your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

An independent tool that allows you to enter 25 items to try it out is called “Home Contents - easy home inventory.”  It’s available for iPhone and iPad here.  This app was recently updated in May, and allows you to easily take pictures of each item, and receipts if you have them.  You can then record the purchase price, replacement cost, serial numbers and notes.  Look at the fun you can have after Christmas each year!

If you have any special questions, or you’d like a referral to a professional insurance agent in the area, please call us at SERVPRO, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

The first thing we'll do is to make sure the property is secure.  If the fire department had to open up any windows or doors to gain access, then we'll board these up, and do it according to the city or county ordinances.  Using an expert like SERVPRO will help you avoid paying any fines that might be assessed by doing something wrong in the aftermath of a fire.

We spoke to Haslet Fire Chief, Kirt Mays, and he agreed that there are many hidden dangers after a fire, and it's important to have an expert on hand to help assess the situation.  There could have been dangerous fumes released in the course of the fire, or there may be problems in the structure of the home that need to be fixed prior to anyone trying to move things out of the home or begin repairs.

The next step is to work with your insurance company and outline a plan to begin clean up and make repairs.  SERVPRO can handle the cleanup operation, and even bring in contractors to make repairs.  We'll help to get you back in your home, like it never even happened.

Why not take a minute right now, and put our number in your cell phone, 817.232.3333.  We're available 24/7, and while you may never need to call us, you'll have it at your fingertips if you do.

Storm Damage Spring Storm Season is Here! Thunderstorm

Storm Damage

Springtime in North Texas means storm season is here!  While we get the advantage of some 80 degree days in March and April, we also have to worry about heavy rains, strong winds, thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes!  We at SERVPRO haven't yet figured out how to create a protective shell around your home, but we are ready at a moment's notice if you have to deal with storm damage at your property.

Storms can uproot trees, pick up patio furniture, and occasionally smash in a window.  Our storm damage clean-up crew can assess the damage, complete any temporary repairs to protect your property and family, and then make arrangements to have permanent repairs made.  We can quickly board up windows, or install a tarp over a hole in the roof; and then clean up any water that has accumulated inside your home.

Water Damage Restoration

Removing any standing water is a critical first step because water damage can be extremely detrimental to the infrastructure of your home.  Water damage restoration is a specialty of ours, and we have vacuums, dryers and other special equipment to remove the water as quickly as possible and dry out carpeting, floors, and more.  Procrastinating when it comes to water damage restoration can make the difference between having to arrange for a repair, to a costly replacement of large sections of your flooring or walls.

Once the storm passes, we can work with your homeowner’s insurance company to provide photos, reports and estimates to complete the necessary repairs.  Once approved, SERVPRO will make all of the arrangements to repair the damage and restore your home as it was before the storm hit.

Keep our number handy by adding it to your phone today, 817.232.3333.  Once you call us, we’ll contact our crews and give you an estimate of how long before we’ll be on site.  In the meantime, look over our home emergency tips and stay safe!
